Small Businesses Need to Get More Social, Study Finds

Many small business websites are not optimized for social media, according to a study by SMB StudyScape.

The April 16 report shows that almost 80% of small business websites lack links to Facebook, and even more that do not have links to Twitter or LinkedIn. SMB StudyScape’s results were compiled from more than 1 million small business websites around the world.

“SMBs worldwide are falling behind consumers in the digital commerce arena,” said Neal Polachek, industry expert. “There’s a tremendous opportunity for SMB aggregators and resellers to bridge this gap, but it will require strategic commitment and solid execution.”

More data released by the SMB StudyScape follows:

  • Six out of 10 SMB websites in the U.S. are missing either a local or toll-free telephone number on the home page to contact the business.
  • Nearly 75% of SMB websites lack an email link on their home page for consumers to contact the business.
  • 93.3 percent of SMB websites are not mobile compatible and will not render successfully on mobile devices or smartphones.
