The Heartbleed virus has been all over the news lately and it may have you wondering whether it is something that can affect your business and if so how to protect your business. Unfortunately, it is something that can affect your business and thus you need to be proactive in working with your IT department or provider to protect your business.

What is the Heartbleed Virus?

The Heartbleed virus is a dangerous computer virus that allows hackers to exploit a flaw in the OpenSSL hardware to steal data such as passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal information. Heartbleed is a very dangerous because the majority of major websites use OpenSSL encryption software.

Will Changing All My Passwords Protect My Business Enough From Heartbleed?

This is one step you can take to protect your personal and business data especially if you know websites and services you use were affected by Heartbleed. Unfortunately, that is not enough to protect your business. You may need to take additional steps to upgrade/update your network servers and you will need new SSL certificates updated. You may also need your OpenSSL to be updated on your company computers.

How Can I Protect My Business From Heartbleed and Other Viruses?

  • Confirm that your network servers have been upgraded or updated to provide protection against the most current viruses.
  • Check that your SSL has been completely updated on your company computers and if you have a company website that new SSL certificates have been generated.
  • Put a network security plan in place
